The Central Iowa Chapter of the American Sewing Guild has approximately 120 members. Members come from a broad geographical area of Iowa. Our chapter has a strong interest in garment sewing, but all types of sewing are represented among our members.
Chapter meetings normally include an educational component, time for socializing (and snacking), and members' enjoy showing and telling about their latest project. A normal chapter meeting will see 30-50 members in attendance. There is a nominal $2 fee for each chapter meeting to cover the cost of the facility.
Neighborhood and Special Interest Group meetings are smaller groups that represent a local area where sewers want to get together or who have a special sewing interest. Any member can start a new meeting group in your neighborhood or for your own special interest. All you need is a coordinator, a few interested members and some place to meet. Members may attend any or all of the group meetings. Group meetings are normally a smaller, more personal group of 5 to 15 members. Group meetings may or may not have a nominal fee, depending on the location and activity.
If you sew and want new inspiration, are just learning to sew, want to update your skills or just enjoy being with others who share your passion for sewing, give a chapter meeting or a group meeting a try. Non-members are welcome at chapter or group meetings, but are expected to join the ASG after two "trials." Give us that try and we think you will be hooked!!!
If you are located in eastern or western Iowa there are also chapters in Cedar Rapids and Omaha. See the National ASG website for contact information for those groups.
The American Sewing Guild is a non-profit organization, led by volunteer board members. The Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) normally meets following chapter meetings. Members are welcome to attend meetings or contact any board member with a question, suggestion or concern. Current CAB members are published in the chapter newsletter.
Leadership Opportunities: Members are encouraged to volunteer to assist in various capacities and to consider a board position. Elections are held for the President, two Vice-Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer each December. Additional members are appointed to the board to manage additional tasks. Contact a current board member for additional information on how you can make our chapter even better with your help
